A new program of its first kind
There is a tremendous
pressure on environment due to burgeoning population,
industrialization, indiscriminate burning of fossil fuels
and forest denudation. Further, meeting the
challenges of energy demand coupled with environmental
protection in view of depleting fossil resources is a major
task of scientist and engineers. To ensure economic
uplifment by way of exploitation of abundantly available
renewable energy sources with environmental safety and
conservation of natural resources, manpower development is
necessary. Realizing the importance of this
situation, a course on “B.Tech. (Energy and
Environmental Engineering)” has been started at
Agricultural Engineering College and Research Institute,
Tamil Nadu Agricultural University (TNAU) from 2004 onwards
at Coimbatore Campus. It is a first of its kind in
India to offer a bachelor degree in the combined subjects
of Energy and Environmental Engineering as a self
supporting programme on B.Tech. (Energy and Environmental
Engineering).
Selection
Procedure
Selection
of candidates is totally based on merit judged by the
performance at the Higher Secondary level and in the Tamil
Nadu Professional Courses Entrance Examination. The
programme provides personal attention and best possible
practical exposure to each of the
students.
The
Curriculum
Innovative
Courses
This
unique programme is specially designed and meticulously
structured with latest innovative concepts in the field of
Energy and Environmental Engineering like Solar, Wind and
Biomass energy conversion, Waste
handling, Public
health engineering,
Municipal solid
waste treatment, Waste water engineering, Industrial waste
treatment, Geo-thermal and Ocean energy technologies,
Energy storage systems and distribution, Energy auditing
and management, Groundwater and pollution control, Coastal
eco-system engineering, Soil & water pollution
engineering, Epidemiology and control of communicable
disease, Air pollution and control etc. Through knowledge
on theory and practical is imparted to prepare students for
the professional skill development to tackle the current
energy crisis and environmental problems.
Industrial Training
Special
emphasis on practical training is a part of B.Tech (EEE)
course to the students to acquaint themselves with the
problems and rigorous practices in industries. The
students undergo industrial training for a period of three
months in various industries related to renewable energy
and industries posing pollution problems Apart from this,
the students are also encouraged to take-up training in
industries during summer vacation.
Study
Tours
The
students of this programme are also exposed to
different industries during study tours (30
days in 2 splits) spanning the state and country as a
whole. It is mandatory for the students to visit and
acquire knowledge from the industries as partial
fulfillment of the curriculum.
Project
Work
The
students are engaged and guided to take up a team project
work during VI and VII semesters of their curriculum aiming
to expose the students to the realms of implementation
strategies and challenges
Infrastructure
Facilities
The
programme is offered in an interdisciplinary mode by the
Department of Bioenergy and Department
of Soil and Water.
Conservation
Engineering supported by Department of Farm Power and
Machinery. These departments have qualified and trained
staff to handle the courses. The programme exposes
the students to state-of-art laboratory facilities created
at these departments with the assistance from Ministry of
Non-conventional energy sources, Indian Council of
Agricultural Research, Energy Development Agencies,
Non-Governmental Organizations, Ministry of Rural
Development, Ministry of Environment and Forests and
various National and International supporting
agencies.
