Dr.P.Subbian, basically professor of
Agronomy, has assumed the office of Registrar of Tamil Nadu
Agricultural University on 04.07.2009. He has completed his
schooling at Velliyampalayam pudur and Government Higher
Secondary School, Bhavanisagar, Erode District. After
completion of his PUC at Gobi Arts College in 1973, he
joined at Tamil Nadu Agricultural University, Coimbatore
and obtained B.Sc (Agri), M.Sc (Agri) and Ph.D. degrees
during 1977, 1979 and 1989 respectively. He has been the
postdoctoral research fellow of Ohio State University, USA
during 1998.
Dr.P.Subbian has the service of 30 years in TNAU at various
positions including Assistant Registrar (1993-94),
Technical and personal officer to the Vice-Chancellor
(1994-96), Deputy Registrar (1996-98, 2000-04), Joint
Registrar (2004 -2006), Professor and Head, Agricultural
Research Station, Bhavanisagar (2006-07), Principal, Dr.
M.S. Swaminathan Institute of Agriculture, Bhavanisagar
(2006-2007) and Founder Director, Agribusiness Development
(2007-09). During his tenure as Director (ABD), the action
was initiated for commercialization of viable University
products and technologies and establishment of
Agri-business Incubator at TNAU. By the solitary effect of
Director (ABD), TNAU-Private Hybrid Seed Research and
Technology Consortium has been established for large scale
production and marketing of quality seeds of rice, maize,
oilseeds and horticultural crops through public-private
partnership mode. He is also acting as chairman and member
of various administrative and academic Committees of TNAU
and other National Institutes.
He has been actively involved in research for about 20
years and evolved suitable Cropping Systems for Coimbatore
and Bhavanisagar garden land conditions. In particular, he
has introduced several agronomic practices and technologies
to enhance the yield in chewing tobacco. He has completed
28 research sub-projects on crop improvement and its
suitability to Tamil Nadu conditions. He has obtained five
externally funded projects from various funding agencies
like DBT, DST, NAIP, etc. He has published more than 100
research papers both in International and National level
journals. He has also authored for six books.
He has received three National and International level
awards for his research contribution in agronomy. So far,
He has guided 8 Ph.D. and 6 M.Sc students. He has visited
several countries including USA, Australia, Canada,
Philippines, Malaysia and Singapore mainly for the purpose
of presenting research papers at international conferences
and attending research trainings.
