About the department

Agricultural College and Research Institute, Madurai established in the year 1965 is the second biggest constituent college of TNAU located 12 Km way from Madurai city in the Madurai – Trichy Highway. The Department of Agricultural Botany is one of the oldest units established since the inception of the college and renamed as Department of Plant Breeding and Genetics during 2002. Presently this Department specializes in Plant Breeding & Genetics, Cytogenetics, Biotechnology and Bioinformatics.

The faculties of this department have been trained abroad both in conventional plant breeding methods and modern biotechnological tools. More than 250 M.Sc.(Ag). And 78 Ph.D. students have acquired their degree in Plant Breeding and Genetics from this Department.

RESEARCH FARM – An area of 23.8 acres comprising of garden land and wetland is available exclusively for conducting research program for staff and post-graduate students.


PLANT TISSUE CULTURE LAB – light, temperature and humidity controlled lab has been designed for specialized applications such as,
• For screening salinity and drought tolerance,
• anther culture,
• micropropagation


GLASS HOUSE – with an area of 25m2 is fitted with sprinklers and humidifiers. It is being utilized for hardening of tissue culture plants and temperature control studies.


MARKER ASSISTED SELECTION (MAS) LAB:
It was established from the Rockefeller foundation fund during the year 2006 to augment the breeding programme, advanced equipments like thermocycler, ultracentrifuges, UV- and Phosphor- gel documentation, DNA sequencing systems are available.
