MANDATE

        The zone of institutional responsibility covers the southernmost districts of Tamil Nadu viz., Tirunelveli, Thoothukudi and Kanyakumari.

EDUCATION

  • Upgrading teaching skills of faculty members through training programmes
  • Use of digital aids, video cassettes and Internet facilities for academic programmes
  • Organizing coaching classes and guest lectures for competitive examination in the field of agriculture and civil services.
  • Skill development in students through Rural Agriculture Work Experience and Agro -industrial tie up programmes for solving problems in field and for self employment
  • Imparting effective self learning process including skill oriented training through commercial agricultural courses.
RESEARCH
The research programmes are oriented to meet the needs of clientele of southern districts.
  • Breeding for the development of rice varieties and rice fallow pulses suitable for Tambiraparani command area.
  • Identifying & developing export oriented medicinal herbs.
  • Developing vegetable varieties suitable to this tract.
  • Producing quality hybrid seeds of major crops.
  • Standardizing alternate planting techniques in rice and developing agro techniques.
  • Maximizing yield of rice-fallow pulses.
  • Identifying sustainable agro-forestry systems for wastelands of Tirunelveli and Thoothukudi Districts.
  • Developing technologies for Palmyrah.
  • Formulating IPM technologies for crops.
  • Testing and demonstrating labour saving implements in rice cultivation
  • Developing value added products from Palmyrah and horticultural crops.
EXTENSION
  • Organising training and input sales through Agricultural Support Centre located at Tirunelveli
  • Dissemination of information through zonal meetings, farmers' meetings, radio talks and by publications.
  • Intensive village adoption programs to demonstrate all the technologies in major crops.
  • Conducting on-farm trials on the evaluation of varieties and technologies.
  • Organizing farmers' seminar on need based areas.
  • Conducting farm school on AIR programmes on the latest topics relevant to the farmers of southern districts.
  • Producing foundation and certified seeds and supplying to farmers through department of Agriculture.
