The
genesis of the Department of Floriculture and Landscaping dates back
to 1972, with the establishment of the Horticultural College and Research
Institute, Coimbatore during the same year with the following objectives:
To
educate the under graduate and post graduate students
To standardize the agro techniques in flower crops
To evolve high yielding varieties with high quality
and resistance to pests and diseases.
To produce elite planting materials of ornamental
crops to meet the requirements of farmers and public
To disseminate the developed technologies to the farmers through publication
and mass media.
From 1995 onwards, emphasis has been made on research and development
of medicinal and aromatic crops in this department.
In view of the growing importance of the medicinal and aromatic plants,
the new coordination cell has been established during 2004.
