 Home Science College & Research Institute, Madurai

 

Home Science College and Research Institute is part of Tamil Nadu Agricultural University, situated at Agricultural College and Research Institute, Campus, Madurai. This College was started at Tamil Nadu Agricultural University, Madurai Campus during the year 1980 with undergraduate and post graduate programme. Currently this college is offering four year Home Science programme at under graduate level with food technology a specialization courses. Food Science and Nutrition is being offered at post graduate and doctorate level. Diversified research activities of nutritional standard in the areas of Food Science and Nutrition are being carried out in this college at present. This is situated at Agricultural College and Research Institute, Tamil Nadu Agricultural University, Madurai campus about 15km away from Madurai city on the way to Trichy.

Establishment details

The Home Science College was introduced in Tamil Nadu Agricultural University, Coimbatore during the year 1980 at Madurai, Campus. To start with this college functioned along with one Department of Home Science, with the ICAR accreditation committee approval for introducing other Departments of Home Science in future. During 1984 the existing post graduate programme in Food Science and Nutrition at Tamil Nadu Agricultural University, Coimbatore was transferred to Madurai to strengthen the Home Science College. Consequently during the year 1988 the Ph.D in Food Science and Nutrition was introduced at Madurai.

Objectives

Ê To provide basic knowledge on Home Management practices, Food Science and Nutrition, Human Development, Textiles and Clothing and Extension Education.

Ê To create awareness on community nutrition, Human Development, Textiles and Clothing and Extension Education.

Ê To provide self employment opportunities by promoting cottage industries and women entrepreneurship thereby raising the standard of living.

Ê To promote overall personality, development and to provide self confidence.

Ê To develop new technologies at minimum cost in all the disciplines of Home Science and to improve the existing technologies.

Ê Effective transfer of technologies to the rural communities by appropriate communication methods.

Ê To aim at producing graduates for better nutritional management strategies for the different classes of society.

Ê To produce graduates for meeting our national and international needs

Ê To emphasize food processing and preservation and packaging as special course.

Ê Application of computer for teacher, research and extension in various disciplines of Home Science.

·         Waste Recycling - Recycling the liquid and solid waste arising from individual home community. Method of Recycling. Types of bio gas plants. Version organization involved in research in these areas 

·         Non-conventional energy resources - Ideas about non conventional energy, sun, wind, Tidal energy, details about solar box, solar heaters, solar lanterns are also included. 

·         Ergonomics - Discipline in its own right, as theoretical and fundamental understanding of human behaviour and performance in purposeful in Socio-technical systems.
