Dr. R. Samiyappan, Ph.D, Director (CPMB)

Dr. R. Samiyappan, is the Director, Centre for Plant Molecular Biology, Tamil Nadu Agricultural University, Coimbatore since 4.7.2009. He obtained his Ph.D. in 1988 from TNAU, Coimbatore and got postdoctoral training in Molecular Plant Pathology and biotechnology career fellowship training in Kansas State University, Manhattan, Kansas, USA during 1990-1993 and 1995-1999 respectively. He served at TNAU in different positions for 32 years as Teacher for UG, PG students & Plant Protection Scientist & Director, Centre for Plant Protection Studies for three years (2006-2009). Currently his area of specialization is Molecular Biology and Biotechnology of plant pathogens, insect pests and their interactions with crop plants and their management.

Dr. R. Samiyappan has been working on biotechnology based diagnosis and management in plants to reduce the harmful effects of pest and diseases. He developed Pseudomonas and Bacillus based ecofriendly disease management strategies for the management of many plant diseases, insect pests and nematodes in major Agricultural and Horticultural crops in India. He has also developed DNA and ELISA based molecular diagnostic kits for early detection and molecular tracking of plant pathogens viz., Ganoderma, Colletotrichum and Banana bunchy top virus pathogens in agricultural ecosystem.

As a teacher, he offered several courses in Agricultural Sciences to M.Sc (Ag) and Ph.D. students. So far he guided 20 Ph.D. and 12 M.Sc (Ag) students, who did their research on Molecular Biology and Biotechnology aspects of pests and diseases management in crop plants. Currently 5 are placed in good position in USA, 1 in Canada, 1 in Singapore and 5 are in Taiwan and 7 are in ICAR & CSIR Institutes as Scientists and 2 are in SAU & Bank and 2 as SRF in ICAR & TNAU. As Principal Investigator, he has got 42 externally funded schemes with a total budget outlay of Rs. 929.14 Lakhs from Rockfeller Foundation, USA and DBT, ICAR, CSIR and Ministry of Environments and Forests, NATP New Delhi, ASPEE, Mumbai and several Private Agencies. Further, he is acting as chairman and Member of several professional bodies of Government of India, ICAR, New Delhi & Tamil Nadu State Government related Committees.

He has isolated and characterized several plant protection related genes like chitinase, ACC deaminase and coat protein genes and deposited them in the GenBank, NCBI, USA. Some of the above said Genes were cloned & transformed into rice and tomato and transgenic plants are under evaluation for yield and disease resistance. Besides, differentially expressed 150 ESTs in rice plants primed with P. fluorescens were cloned and sequenced. He has published one book and 250 International and National level research papers. He was conferred with 17 awards and honors and recognitions include Dr. Noel Deerr Gold Medal for best research work in sugarcane crop during 2000 and Tamil Nadu Scientists Award (TANSA) in the field of Agricultural Sciences for the year 2005. He has travelled several countries which include USA, Thailand, Malaysia, Singapore & Australia mainly for the purpose of research trainings and attending international conferences.
