DEPARTMENT OF PULSES

ESTABLISHMENT AND DEVELOPMENT

The Department of Pulses was started in the year 1943 at Coimbatore, situated two kilometers northern side of University campus. This centre comes under northwestern zone of Tamil Nadu with an elevation of 411.98 m and between 11oN latitude and 77oE longitude. The total area is about 69 ha having red and black soils with 8.5 pH. The average rainfall at this centre was 730 mm. The average maximum temperature was 31.94oC and minimum 21.78oC.

Pulses form large group of heterogeneous grains such as Blackgram (Vigna mungo L.), Greengram (Vigna radiata L.), Redgram (Cajanus cajan L.), Horsegram (Macrotyloma uniflorum L.), Bengalgram (Cicer arietinum L.), Soybean (Glycine Max L.), Cowpea (Vigna unguiculata), Avarai (Lablab purpureus var typicus) and Mochai (Lablab purpureus var lignosus).

OBJECTIVES

-         Evolution of high yielding medium duration redgram varieties

-         Evolution of high yielding short duration redgram hybrids utilizing cytoplasmic
    genic male sterile line.

-         Evolution of high yielding short duration greengram and blackgram varieties with
    MYMV resistance

-         Evolution of high yielding short duration cowpea varieties.

-         Evolution of photo-thermo insensitive and high yielding varieties of soybean.

-         Evolution of drought tolerant chickpea varieties.

-         Evaluation of germplasm in all pulse crops for future breeding programs.

-         Production and supply of genetically pure seeds in different varieties of
    pulse crops.

-         Technologies for rainfed system, yield maximization, intercropping etc.
microbial seed treatment and physiological disorders.

-         Management of diseases through biocontrol agents.

-         Evaluation of IPM for pulses

-         Accomplishing post graduate research

-         Popularization of new varieties and technologies developed.

-         Conducting training programs for transfer of technologies in hybrid
seed production and also cultivation of varieties.
