PRE-HARVEST TECHNOLOGIES FOR HORTICULTURAL CROPS

THEORY

          Scope and importance of horticulture and horticultural crops – area, production, exports –climatic zones of India and Tamil Nadu in relation to horticultural crops and their seasonal productivity  - bearing habits of major fruit crops – physical and morphological features of major fruits.  Classification of tropical, sub-tropical, temperate and arid zone horticultural crops – pre-harvest technology of major fruit crops (Mango, Banana, Sapota, Papaya, Apple).

          Importance, area, production and distribution of major vegetable crops in India and Tamil Nadu –classification and pre-harvest technology of major vegetable crops (Tomato, Brinjal, Potato, Chillies, Bhendi, Gouds).

          Importance and scope of gardening – commercial flower crops and their utility – pre-harvest technology of major flower crops (Rose, Gerbera, Jasmine, Chrysanthemum, Crossandra).

Importance and scope of spices, plantation crops in India – Tamil Nadu – area and production – export and import of spices – pre-harvest technology and plantation crops (Pepper, Turmeric, Cardamom, Herbal spices, Coconut, Cashew, Tea, Coffee).

 

PRACTICAL

Features of an Orchard, planning and layout – garden – systems of planting in fruits, vegetables – commercial propagation methods and seed extraction methods in horticultural crops – identification of horticultural crops and their varieties – training and pruning methods in horticultural crops – garden components and their features – preparation of concentrates from commercial flowers – constructed structures for growing of horticultural crops – maturity indices for horticultural crops.
